Common Migration Strategies

The chart below can help you pick the best strategy for migration.

Single-Pass Migration

Big Bang

A single pass migration strategy that will move the entire mailbox in one pass after MX records are cut-over. A typical scenario consists in cutting over on a Friday evening and migrating during the week end.

Cost-effective

Simplest to implement

Users accessing the new system may not have access to all their data when work resumes

Any items created during or after the migration may be missed by a single pass

Downtime may occur for some users if migration fails or takes too long

Multi-Pass Migration

Pre-Stage

This multi-pass migration strategy will move a majority of the mailbox data prior to the cut-over. A delta pass after the cut-over will migrate only the remaining mailbox items.

Perform cut-over only after confirming the majority of the data has been migrated

Customize the migration project with advanced multi-pass features

Perform continuous delta passes while email delivery is fully rerouted to the destination

Require advance planning

Non-email items are not available at cut-over time

Quick Switch

This multi-pass migration strategy will allow you to accelerate a transition to your new system by moving recent data first and performing a delta migration after your MX records are cut-over.

Accelerate adoption of the new system by providing users with their most important data

Customize the migration project with advanced multi-pass features

Perform continuous delta passes while email delivery is fully rerouted to the destination

Not all of the data is available at time of cut-over

What is a Pass?

A pass starts when you submit a mailbox for migration. Only successful, full passes count towards your pass limit.

What is a Cut-Over?

When you move to a new home, you must notify the Post Office of your address change. When you migrate to a new email system, you must notify the internet by changing MX records with your DNS provider.
